Planning is a crucial aspect of various industries, ensuring efficient and effective operations in commercial settings as well as for domestic projects. We sat down with Principal Consultant Leah Seber to get her thoughts on what makes a great planner!

Liaising with both clients and customers

Experience in liaising with both clients and customers is crucial for success in planning. As a planner, you will be required to communicate effectively with a range of people, including clients, residents, property managers, and contractors. Building strong relationships and understanding the needs of each individual is essential to the role.

Knowledge of Different Trades

Planners need to have a basic understanding of various trade roles. Knowing the terminology, processes, and basic requirements of different trades can help you coordinate and plan projects efficiently.

Knowledge of Emergency Housing Repairs

Quick action is often required in emergency housing repairs. A planner’s knowledge of common emergency repairs, prevention methods, and effective problem-solving is crucial in ensuring residents’ safety and well-being.

Good Telephone Communication Skills

Effective telephone communication skills are vital for planners. As a planner, you will need to make and receive calls to schedule appointments, collect information from clients and contractors, and give updates on the progress of your projects. The ability to communicate clearly and professionally over the phone is essential for this role.

IT Skills

Proficiency in IT skills is a must for planners. You will be responsible for updating and maintaining systems and databases, and using software applications such as Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting. A solid grasp of IT tools will enhance your efficiency in managing and organising project data.

Compliance Knowledge

Planners need to have a good understanding of industry regulations and compliance. This involves being aware of relevant laws, building codes, and compliance requirements to ensure that your planning activities follow legal and regulatory standards. By having this basic knowledge, planners can ensure they are doing everything they need to do to be compliant and avoid any legal issues or complications.

Ability to Work Under Pressure and Time Frames

Planners often work in fast-paced environments and must manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Remaining organised, meeting deadlines, and prioritizing tasks are essential skills.
