Preparing for an interview can be stressful, but virtual interviews are now a lot more common, which allows you to do it from the comfort of your home. Even though you skip the travel & waiting awkwardly in a reception area, an online interview is similar to a face-to-face interview once it begins.

So here are some things you should consider!

Dress for the occasion

Remember it’s still an interview, so make an effort! Dressing like you would if it was an in-person interview is always a good idea. Getting dressed up in an outfit you feel confident and comfortable in will put you in the right mindset and allow you to focus more!

Background Check

When setting up for your interview, make sure you have a quiet space with a plain background. This will minimise distractions and stop people wandering past in the background. The last thing you want is for your interviewer to be distracted by something behind you, especially whilst you are answering a question. In contrast, make sure there isn’t too much going on in front of you either; although the cat knocking items off the kitchen side cannot always be stopped, don’t let it interfere with your interview!

Minimise Distractions

Be sure to focus on the interview and get rid of distractions around you: turn off your TV and put your phone on silent and be aware of anything else that could make a sudden noise. If you have other members of your household with you, ensure that they are aware of what you are doing and how important it is.

Keep your eye on the prize

On a video call, it’s easy to dart your eyes around the screen and get distracted. Make sure to place your interviewer’s face in the centre of your screen, just below your camera, and try to maintain eye contact with your camera whilst talking.

We would suggest minimizing all other tabs and using a pen and paper to take notes instead of a keyboard. It’s also a good idea to have your CV on hand whilst having your interview – it can be helpful to refer to if you’re asked any difficult questions.
