About Wide Horizons
Wide Horizons provide life-changing adventures for disadvantaged children and young people, they do this by working with schools and local community groups to provide outdoor programmes for children and young people. This includes providing adventures for children living in highly deprived areas, who are behind in their education, who are at risk of suspension or permanent exclusion, children suffering with depression and mental health problems, children with disabilities or debilitating illnesses, NEET young people and young offenders.
Their adventures focus on the development of a child’s personal and social skills, and on bringing the school curriculum to life. They operate eight outdoor centres which offer a mixture of day and residential courses focussed on the individual development of each child. Through adventurous activities like canoeing, gorge walking and climbing, children learn how to co-operate with others, take responsibility for their own welfare, and have the confidence and determination to overcome challenges in a supportive setting.
They teach children as young as two about the wider world around them through environmentally-focussed activities such as habitat walks, river studies and pond-dipping. Additionally, their community outreach programmes introduce children to outdoor spaces in their local area, ensuring that they develop a sense of stewardship for green spaces in their community and choose to explore them outside of the school day.
