Looking for a new job is an exciting task – a challenging one, but exciting nonetheless. You know what you’re good at, and what kind of role you’re hoping for. But what else should you bare in mind?
We’ve spoken previously about what you should consider before beginning your job search. It’s important to know what you want from a role, and to search widely for roles that might not pop up on LinkedIn; 80% of vacancies aren’t advertised online.
Benefits – Know What You Value
Naturally, your salary will be an important aspect in deciding whether to accept or reject a job offer – or even apply in the first place.
But there’s a lot more to consider when sifting through vacancies. Benefits like insurance coverage, paid time off, and company equity should all be compared.
Location can be a benefit, too. Do you really want to be commuting an hour or so every single day? Or is it not that much of an issue? Look beyond what you’ll be doing on-the-job, and picture your daily routine in a wider context.
Office Culture – Will You Fit?
You should keep an eye on this one, because you can bet your prospective co-workers will have it in mind.
As you’ll be spending roughly eight hours a day (or more) with these people, knowing that you’ll all get along is just as important as benefits and payment.
It shouldn’t be a deal-breaker, but by gauging through their online presence – and hopefully your interview experience – you should be able to know whether you’ve got an exciting career ahead of you.
Growth Opportunities – Can You Develop?
Millennials want growth. When looking for a job, they deem it important to be mentored and develop their skills.
So, ask. Ask the hiring manager when you have an interview, or look up companies on sites like Glassdoor.com. There’s plenty of information available online about large companies, so use it when scoping out potential roles.
Nothing’s Personal
This is important to remember whenever things don’t go how you’d hoped.
The fact is that vacancies often receive tens, hundreds, or even thousands of applications. Just because you didn’t get this job, doesn’t mean you won’t get the next. Stay positive, keep applying, and secure the perfect fit for you.
